Speed Cameras
Introduction
Speed Cameras were initially introduced to Cyprus roads by the Government and Cyprus Police on May 2007 in order to improve road safety by reducing speeding and accidents.
Operation
When Speed cameras were first introduced to our roads, there were different kind of reactions in terms of citizen privacy. Speed Cameras should not be used for invading citizens' personal life.
Speed Camera is a device, formed by a camera and a vehicle-monitoring device. Such a device can detect and identify by taking photographs, ONLY motor vehicles that violate Traffic regulations and Laws such as:
(a) Excessive Speeds
(b) Use of Mobile Phone during driving
(c) Traffic Light Offences.
Operation Example
When a vehicle passes from a Speed Camera Location with Excessive Speed, Speed Camera will take a series of photographs. These photographs will then be examined by the Police traffic department in order to identify the registration plates of the specific vehicle.
Aim
The aim of Speed Cameras is to improve road safety by reducing Traffic Regulation and Law violations such as speeding. Moreover, Speed Cameras are used to improve driver’s behaviour and reduce the number of people killed and injured on our roads.
